Never throw Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs (CFLs) or any fluorescent bulb in the garbage. They contain a small amount of mercury, which will contaminate the landfill and seep into the soil. From there, it can contaminate food or water supplies.
CFLs and other fluorescent bulbs can be taken to Home Depot or Ikea any time for recycling; both companies accept used CFLs.
Livingston's Annual Electronics Recycling and Paper Shredding Events now also accept the following fluorescent bulbs:
- 4- and 2-foot bulbs
- U-shape
- Round
- CFL
CFLs can also be taken to the Essex County Household Hazardous Waste collection events in the spring and fall.
