Property Engraving

Theft Prevention

This program is a burglary prevention / property identification program for use in homes and businesses.

It requires a small amount of time and effort and involves marking and then inventorying property. Marking denies the would-be thief a market for stolen items.

Valuables marked conspicuously with an identifying number will not be readily resalable. This program works even when property is recovered as it lets it be identified by police and returned to the owner. Items that should be marked are those that might be attractive to a thief, such as:

  • Camera equipment
  • Computers
  • Gaming systems
  • Stereos
  • Televisions

Small or very valuable items such as jewelry or antiques can be either engraved by a jeweler or photographed for identification purposes.

Residents may borrow an engraver from the police department so that they may mark their valuables. They will also receive window decals to place in their home which alerts possible thieves that valuable items have been marked for identification purposes. For more information or to request to borrow an engraver, please contact the Community Policing Unit at 973-992-3000, ext. #3600 or email us using the subject line Property Engraving.
