Livingston Township employees showed their support for heart health at the annual “Go Red” event on Friday, February 7, 2020.

The event included heart health education from the Livingston Health Department and ShopRite of Livingston, a blood pressure screening, a CardioChek screening conducted by Saint Barnabas Medical Center, and massages and stress reduction tips provided by Shulman Wellness Center. Livingston Township employees, Township Council members, and residents of the community attended the event.

More than one in three women will be affected by heart disease during their lifetime. Most women have at least one factor that increases their risk for heart disease.

“Go Red for Women” is a nationwide campaign that encourages women to make at least one change to reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease. National Wear Red Day is the first Friday in February, which is recognized as American Heart Month to raise awareness for heart health.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. While some risk factors for heart disease cannot be controlled, there are several changes you can make to decrease your risk, including: getting the recommended amount of physical activity each week, choosing to eat more nutritious foods, and quitting smoking, if applicable.

During the month of February, the Livingston Health Department’s display with information on heart health will remain in the lobby of Livingston Town Hall, 357 S. Livingston Avenue (near the front entrance). Stop by Town Hall to learn about heart disease and the changes you can make to reduce your risk, or visit the American Heart Association online at goredforwomen.org or heart.org.
