Livingston's drinking water has been, and continues to be, safe.
An independent non-profit called the Environmental Working Group (EWG) recently issued a drinking water "report" containing a sensationalized title ("Cancer-Linked Contaminants in Livingston Drinking Water: Report") that contained misleading information. That publication and was subsequently publicized on Livingston Patch, causing concern among residents.
EWG has no regulatory authority, and its website acknowledges it uses "guidelines" created as an internal assessment of various contaminant levels. The organization largely relies on its review of selected research from other entities and draws conclusions based on its own internal guidelines, rather than those established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPS) or the NJ Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP).
This organization's conclusions and often alarming warnings have been the subject of frequent criticism from respected scientific and medical groups.
