Do Not Knock
Livingston Township offers residents a quick and easy way to avoid having commercial solicitors disturb them in their homes.
Residents can quickly and easily register for the Township's "Do Not Knock" list.
When they register for the "Do Not Knock" list, residents will receive a "Do Not Knock" sticker which can be placed in a visible area near the front door of the home.
Once registered, addresses will be maintained in an online database. Those addresses (no names) will then be included in a "Do Not Knock" printout provided to commercial solicitors going door to door. Commercial solicitors are required to avoid approaching any addresses on the list.
Non-commercial, religious, and/or political canvassers and solicitors are protected by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and are permitted to perform those activities from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm on weekdays and weekends.
The Township's "Do Not Knock" list does not prohibit registrants from receiving door-to-door visitation by non-profit, charitable, religious, or political organizations, per applicable state and federal laws.
Following the "Do Not Knock" List
It is the responsibility of the solicitor to follow the Do Not Knock list.
If a resident is on the list and is still be solicited at their home, they should call the Livingston Police Department at 973-992-3000 to report the incident immediately.
